The Senica-St Louis Aufrichtigs
Emma Aufrichtig & Descendants
Little is known of Emma Aufrichtig, other than that she was a sister of Alois Aufrichtig, from whom all Senica-St Louis Aufrichtigs included in this section are descended. Alois most probably emigrated to the U.S. in the late 1860s/early 1870s, and in 1880, when 32, he first appeared on a U.S. Census in St Louis. At that time, Alois' nationality was described as Hungarian.
His birthplace Senica - once known as Senitz when part of the Austrian empire - is now part of Slovakia and at various stages in its history has accurately been described as Austrian, Hungarian and Slovakian. Geographically, it is close to Moravia, now part of the Czech Republic, and "home" to several groups of Aufrichtigs - most notably those from Boskovice, a short distance north of the Moravian capital, Brno.
In 1875, an Emma Aufrichtig, from Austria, sailed to the U.S. on board the SS Wieland, arriving at New York on 21 July 1875. Her age had been given as 24, which would have meant a birthdate of cir 1851. Although no manifest has been located, a passenger record exists with the information set out below.

Ships manifests are notorious for containing inaccuracies and, in the absence of any other passenger record for an individual named Emma Aufrichtig, this does appear likely to be Alois's younger sister. However, it is worth noting the following discrepancies and inconsistencies: On the 21 July 1875 arrival date Emma is credited as being 24 years old, which would indicate her birth taking place between 01 January and 20 July 1851. This, however, is at variance with the 1900 US Census, the handwritten original of which gives her month and date of birth as August 1853 or 1855, depending on which pen mark one chooses to assign to the final figure. Another column in that same census form advises that she emigrated to the U.S in 1888 and had been living in the country 22 years! Clearly a mathematical error and an intended total residency of 12 years, the discrepancy between dates of immigration are uncomfortably wide. More helpful, though is a transcribed entry for this Census on which Emma's age is given as 49 and her year of birth "about 1851", forming a perfect match for the SS Bremen passenger record details. In the 1920 Census, though, while the handwritten original and subsequent transcribed edition each provide an acceptable "about 1852" year of birth, they also include a wildly incomparable immigration year of 1869!
Little is known of Emma's early life in the U.S., other than that she made her way to Chicago where brother Alois lived for a short period. She would have been in Chicago about five years before her marriage to Ignatz Weinfeld, a general storekeeper, who was also recorded as Austrian by birth. Ignatz was a widower and the father of four children aged between three and eight when he and Emma wed. His first wife was named Rosa [Rosalie], the mother of Joseph Weinfeld (b.12 February 1872); Kate [Kittie] Weinfeld (16 August 1874); William Weinfeld (7 April 1876) and Samuel Weinfeld (December 1877).
As is confirmed by the table below, Ignatz, Rosa and their then 11 months old son, Josef, entered the United States on board the SS Mosel on 26 July 1873.

Rosa's name has been entered as "Rof." This is clearly an American transcription of the German Gothic letter "s" which closely resembles an "f". The use of the abbreviated name strongly suggests that she was entered on the original manifest as Rosalie or Rosalia. The entry date is consistent with Rosa's believed year of birth, but Ignatz, who was born in October 1846 and therefore 26 in July 1873, is credited with being 28. Baby Josef was born 12 February 1872 and, very possibly entered on the manifest as 17 months old which, owing to the Continental "7", may have been wrongly entered as a "1", thereby declaring him to be aged 11 months.
Rosa was only 27 or 28 when she died on 19 November 1879. It is estimated that widower Ignatz married Emma Aufrichtig about two years later. The couple had three children together: Charles Weinfeld (2 April 1882); Hannah Weinfeld (April 1883), and Roza [Rose] L Weinfeld (February 1887). Tragically their elder daughter, Hannah, at 20, became a victim of the devastating Chicago Iroquois Theatre fire, and her name is included on the Eastland Memorial Society site dedicated to the 602 who perished in the disaster on 30 December 1903. It is said, within the family, that upon hearing of the death of her namesake first cousin in the Iroquois fire, Hannah Aufrichtig Lentin went into labour and delivered a baby girl, Dorothy Lentin, on 1 January 1904.

The Census form states that Ignatz had emigrated to the U.S. in 1875 and Emma had arrived in 1888. It then advises that Ignatz had been in the United States for 25 years, and Emma for 22 years! The form also credits Ignatz with having been born in October 1846 and Emma in August 1853. All children were described as "Single". |

Ignatz Weinfeld, who became a naturalized US citizen on 28 October 1878, died on 18 August 1907.His name lived on when the youngest of his four children with first wife Rosa, Samuel Weinfeld, chose to call his son Ignatius [Nat] Charles Weinfeld. Baby Ignatius was born 30 March 1908. Samuel Weinfeld and his wife Henrietta Salzenstein subsequently had a daughter, Corinne, born 24 July 1916.

For her own place of birth, and that of her parents, Emma had entered Austria/Hungary, in each instance the "Hungary" being crossed out. Son Charles and daughter Roza, who had been entered on the Census form as Rose, did likewise. On the 1900 Census form, Charles, who had been born in 1882, gave his correct age of 18. Twenty years later, the 1920 Census form lists him as being 33. Similarly, Roza was correctly listed as being 13 in 1900, yet 20 years later had also aged only 15 years and is entered as being 28 years old. Adding confusion to Emma's background is that on this form she is credited with having emigrated to the U.S. in 1869. |
