Terre Haute Tribune Obituary

The following obituary report is reproduced by kind permission of  the Terre Haute Tribune of Indiana:

Tuesday, August 13, 1918, page 2, Terre Haute Tribune

Word was received here Monday of the death of Charles Aufrichtig of St. Louis Missouri, who is well known here through his visits to his sister, Mrs. David Silverstein of South Seventh St. Mr. Aufrichtig was apparently in good health when he arose, ate his breakfast with his family and departed for his office. He died shortly after reaching his place of business. He is survived by the widow, two sons, his mother, Mrs. Jennie Aufrichtig; two sisters, Mrs. M. Linton of St. Louis and Mrs. Silverstein of Terre Haute, and a brother, Alfred Aufrichtig, stationed at Jefferson barracks. Mr. Silverstein left Monday to be with Mrs. Silverstein, who has been in St. Louis with her mother and sister for one month.

NB: There are several inaccuracies/inconsistencies within this report. While the details of Charles Aufrichtig and his date of death are accurate, there are mistakes over the name of his brother and married name of one of his sisters. Charles G Aufrichtig was one of four children born to Alois Aufrichtig and Jennie Aufrichtig (née Jenny Lederer). The others were Hannah Aufrichtig, referred to in the obituary notice as Mrs M Linton; an un-named daughter (Elsa Aufrichtig) given as Mrs Silverstein of Terre Haute; and Albert A Aufrichtig. It is assumed that the Terre Haute Tribune has printed Alfred Aufrichtig instead of Albert Aufrichtig.

The 1920 Census, however, lists Jennie Aufrichtig as the mother-in-law of Mike Lentin, and Hannah Lentin as his wife. The Tribune has incorrectly given the name as "Linton". This same Census provides correct details for the widowed 28 years old Edith Aufrichtig, with a daughter and son. The Tribune report should have read "survived by ... two children..." and not "sons".
