Senica-St Louis Aufrichtigs

Alois Aufrichtig & Family Census Listings

Alois Aufrichtig is believed to have emigrated to the U.S.A from Senica, Hungary some time during the 1860s. The earliest Census document on which he is registered is believed to be that of 1880. For an as yet unexplained reason, there appears to have been two 1880 Censuses taken in South Second Street, St Louis. The first was held on 5 June 1880, and the second on 9 November 1880. Census details for the second survey were entered on pre-printed forms on which the month June had been crossed out and replaced with 'November'. While most have consistently described Alois as Hungarian, many have provided variations in spelling of his name.

NB: On this form, Alois' name has been entered as "Aloes Aufrichtig" and his age entered as 33. With a February 1848 birth date, he was 32 at the time. The handwritten original entries for this household list the letter "B" in the Relationship column, representing Alois' position as a Boarder. On transcription, however, this detail was wrongly interpreted as "Brother". Hungary was given as both his Country of Birth, and that of his parents. A copy of the table is available for free online viewing at www.familysearch.org.

NB: On this occasion, Alois was listed as "Aloes Aufrichtait" and his position clearly described as "Boarder". The form also carried his true age of 32. Both he and his Father and Mother were credited with Hungary as the country of birth. Head of the Household, Barbara Fries, had been entered as 52 in the June. By November, four years had been lopped off her age. In contrast, daughter Sophia Fries had gained two years in the intervening five months. Son Bernard was now spelt Bernhard and his age reduced from 10 to 9.

NB: On the 1900 Census form, Alois and his family were incorrectly transcribed as "Aufriehtie". On this occasion, too, his first name was wrongly spelt "Alouis". His country of birth was credited to "Austria Hungary", and that of his parents just "Hungary". Wife Jenny is spelt "Jennie". Both she and her parents have Bohemia as country of birth. As well as providing age on the night of the Census, the form also detailed the month and year in which each inhabitant was born. Alois, who was born 5 February 1848, is credited with May 1848. This is possibly due to the fact that in Europe his birthdate would be written as 5/2/1848, where as in the U.S. it would appear as 2/5/1848. Jenny, whose birthdate was 12 June 1864, would have been one week off her 36th birthday, yet the Census form credits her with being 37. According to this Census, Alois and Jenny had been married 18 years.

NB: On the 1910 Census form, Alois and his family were incorrectly transcribed as both "Aufrichtog" and "Aufrichtoz". On this occasion his country of birth has been listed as "Hungarian German" and that of his father credited to "Austria Hungary". He described his profession as "Manufacturer / Coppersmith".  He was listed as being 61 instead of 62. Jenny's name has been correctly spelt, but her age given as 46 instead of 47. Living with them were daughter Hannah Aufrichtig Lentin, her husband Mike Lentin and their three children. Of Alois and Jenny's three Lentin grandchildren, only the eldest, Dorothy Lentin, was accurately listed on the form. Grandson Melvin Gordon Lentin was listed as Grand Daughter Melvina Lentin, and youngest Grand Daughter Reva Lentin was listed as Vivian Lentin. [NOTE: Reva Lentin has also frequently been incorrectly listed as Rosa Lentin.]
