Moritz F Aufrichtig & Family - Census Listings

Moritz F Aufrichtig emigrated to the U.S.A some time between 1864, when he was in receipt of a travel grant in Boskovice, Moravia and 1869, the year he married Betti Zeimer in Manhattan, New York. He and his family have been included in the following Censuses, details from which have been reproduced in the tables below. It is interesting to note that at various points in time, Moritz's birthplace has been credited to Austria, Germany, Bohemia and Moravia, with virtually each "new" location assigned to a variation in spelling of his name!

NOTE: Moritz's first son, aged 9, was named Samuel. From this it may be deduced that his father Samuel L Aufrichtig, born 1814, died some time between 1864 and 1871, the year of his son's birth. Moritz's Occupation was given as Watchmaker. On what appears to be the first Census in which he is featured, Moritz's name has been Americanised to read "Morris Aufrichtig".

NB: Moritz's daughter Rachel is credited with having been born 28 October 1879, but does not appear on this Census form.

NOTE: Moritz's Occupation given as Jeweler. Daughter Rachel is listed as a Secretary. On this form, Moritz's birthplace has been listed as Germany and Betti's as Bohemia. Credited on the form as Morris Aufrichtig, this was subsequently wrongly transcribed as Moses Aufrichtig.

NB: The Census suggests Moritz and Bertha had four boarders. Of these, David and Rosa Levitzky had previously been included on the 1870 Census as residing in No.4 Precinct 10 Ward, San Francisco, and in the 1880 Census as living with their infant son Reuben in Hayes Street, San Francisco. They subsequently appeared on the 1910 U.S. Census as living in Duncan Street, Oakland, Alameda, California.

Particularly worthy of note are third and fourth boarders, Morris Ritch, aged 25, born in Bohemia to similarly native parents, and his wife Lillian, aged 22. There can be little doubt that these are Maurice Reich, who, one year earlier in 1899, married Lilllian B Aufrichtig, the daughter of Moritz and Betti. The German name "Reich" means "rich" and Maurice appears to have inserted an additional letter "t" to form the name Ritch. The Census form credits his month and year of birth as April 1875, a fact reinforced by the 1920 Census (further down this page) confirming Moritz's son-in-law as being 45 at that time. Lillian Ritch's Census details of a July 1877 birthdate are consistent with those of Moritz F Aufrichtig's daughter

NOTE: The details on this 1900 San Francisco Census entry almost certainly identify Ike Upright as Isaac A Aufrichtig. Handwritten entries give Ike Upright's date of birth as April 1871 and age as 29, and list Jennie's date of birth as November 1876, and her age as 23 [Isaac's age has, variously, been credited as April 1871, 1872 and 1873. The  New York birthplace matches that of Isaac Aufrichtig, as does the Germany location for his parents. According to this entry, Ike and Jennie Upright had been married two years. Isaac A Aufrichtig is believed to have married Mabel Gruman, the mother of his two sons, in late 1895.

NOTE: The 1910 Census appears to be the only occasion on which use is made of a middle initial. The form was completed as Moritz F Aufrichtig, but wrongly transcribed as Mortiz F Aufrichtig. Bertha [Bettie] died one year later on 29 April 1911.

NOTE: Chronologically, Rachel Aufrichtig should be placed following the 1910 US Census entries for her older siblings Samuel, Isaac and Louis Aufrichtig. However, she has been placed directly following Moritz Aufrichtig's entry since according to the Census document, she was the very next listing and would appear to have lived next door to her father. The Census form credits Rachel and Lawrence Thompson with having been married for six years. Her age has been wrongly entered as 26 - her 28 October 1879 birthdate would have made her 30 years of age at the time.

NOTE: The combination of the name Samuel Upright and residence in Buchanan Street would suggest that this is the same Samuel Upright that lived in this road at the time of the 1900 Census. At the time of the 1910 Census, Samuel would have been 39 and not 37. It is difficult to determine whether the entry next to his marital status indicates M for married or W for a widower.

NOTE: The 1910 Census form confirms Isaac's middle initial and gives his age as 39, suggesting a birthdate of April 1871.Mabel's age is given as 27, suggesting an October 1883 birthdate instead of the 25 October 1886 date with which she has been credited. Almost certainly, this Census provides an accurate year of birth, since the form also advises that the couple had been married nine years. Birthplaces for both Isaac's father and mother are, of course, totally inaccurate.

NOTE: Incorrect Transcription of the 1920 Census form led to Moritz's name being listed as "Monty". On the form he had entered 1884 as his year of immigration to the United States. In all probability this date referred to U.S. naturalisation as he is recorded as having married in Manhattan in 1869 and by 1884 all seven of his children had been born.

NOTE: In similar fashion to the 1910 Census, Isaac's age of 49 would suggest a birthdate of April 1871 and not the 5 April 1872 date with which he has been credited. This Census form also suggests that on the day of the Census in January 1920, Mabel was 35 years old. Unlike previous Census forms, there was no required entry for the number of years marriage.

NOTE: Rachel [Rae] Aufrichtig was born 28 October 1879 and would have been 40 on the night of the Census, not 35 as stated. This census form provides a similar age discrepancy to that given in the preceding 1910 Census when Rachel's age was entered as 26 instead of 30. Clarence F Keith was born 17 April 1877 and would therefore have been 42. NB: In 1910, Rachel had been married to Lawrence E Thompson for six years. The couple appear to have divorced since he appears on a 1920 Census form as married to Taduska Thompson, 38 and living in La Salle Avenue, Los Angeles.

NOTE: Moritz's name had been incorrectly transcribed as Morrit Aufrechtig. On this occasion, his country of birth had been listed as Austria and his father's given as Moravia. With him on the night of the Census were Carrie Upright, described as "Niece" and nephews Robert Upright and Egon J Upright. Carrie Upright, however, was in fact Kamilla Patzowski, Moritz's niece through her marriage to Eduard Aufrichtig, the son of his elder brother, Gabriel Aufrichtig. Her son, Egon, was  thereby Moritz's great nephew, as was Robert, eldest son of Heinrich Aufrichtig, and grandson of Moritz's other elder brother, Alois Aufrichtig.

Kamilla's eldest child, daughter Valerie Aufrichtig, had been the first of her family to emigrate to the U.S., arriving at Ellis Island on 20 December 1920 aged 20. Her cousin, Robert Aufrichtig, at 17 years of age, followed her, arriving at Ellis Island on 22 July 1922. Each had entered their uncle Moritz Aufrichtig on the ship manifests as their U.S. contact. Kamilla and Egon are believed to have completed the family presence following Eduard's death some time between 1923 and 1928. Kamilla, Egon and Robert all applied for and were granted U.S. naturalisation, following which they changed their name from Aufrichtig to the literal English translation of Upright, as had Moritz's sons before them.

  • Another visitor to Moritz Aufrichtig had been Berta Aufrichtig [02], daughter of Alois Aufrichtig and Franziska Schwarz. Travelling on the SS-Noordam to the U.S., her manifest entry had stated that she was visiting her uncle Moritz Aufrichtig in San Francisco. Her own birth year of 1876 suggested that she was the twin sister of Heinrich Aufrichtig.

NOTE: In 1920,, Rachel gave her age as 35 instead of 40. Ten years later she was credited as being 46 when it should have read 50. On this occasion, Clarence F Keith's age is accurate having held his 53rd birthday the previous week. Entries for places of birth for Rachel's father are indecipherable and feature deletions, including the country Austria. There are similar crossings out for her mother's place of birth, alongside of which has been entered "Prague". If this were accurate, it would provide the only available documentation to date for Bettie Zeimer's place of birth.

Staying with Rachel and husband Clarence was Patricia D Upright, grand-daughter of her elder brother Louis Upright. Patricia's father and Louis's son, Irving Elliott Upright, had died of TB and his widow, Winona Lindberg Upright had become too sick herself to take care of her.
