Teplice Aufrichtigs
Fritz Aufrichtig & Family
Fritz Aufrichtig was born in Teplice, Bohemia cir 1890. The earliest documented notes on Fritz are those contained on the manifests of the vessel SS Amerika which set sail from Hamburg, Germany on 22 January 1910 and arrived at Ellis Island on 01 February 1910. Fritz's age was given as 20 and, from subsequent US Census returns, it was clear that his 1910 voyage was for emigration purposes.

In 1917 Fritz, who had not yet received U.S. citizenship, completed a World War 1 Draft Registration Card, on which he claimed exemption from draft on the grounds of High Treason. His date of birth was given as 22 February 1890. His occupation was described as a Bookkeeper, employed by Charles H Reisig of 269 Water Street, New York City. He was 27 and Single at that time.
In 1919, nine years after emigration, Fritz successfully applied for U.S. Naturalisation.

That same year he travelled back to Europe as a U.S. Citizen, returning on board the SS Lafeyette which had set sail from Le Havre on 6 December 1919 and arrived in New York on 18 December 1919. Accompanying Fritz was his wife, Charlotte. The ship's manifest had erroneously entered his name as "Anfrichtig". Charlotte's naturalisation papers were signed at the U.S. Legation in Prague which appears to suggest that this may have resulted following her marriage to Fritz, now a U.S citizen. The Lafayette Manifest, under the heading "If naturalized, give name and location of court which issued naturalisation papers, and date of papers", contained the entry "Supreme Court, New York City - July 30th, 1919"

Three weeks after their return to the U.S., the 1920 Census was held. On the night of 8 January, the couple were each listed as "Boarder" at 170 Stratford Road, Brooklyn, Kings, New York.

NOTE: The Census form confirms Fritz Aufrichtig's emigration to the U.S. in 1910 and lists 1919 as Charlotte's date. Fritz's Profession is given as Salesman in the Export industry. The form also confirms that Fritz's father was born in Teplitz, Austria, but inexplicably credits his mother's birthplace as New York! Other inconsistencies are that three weeks earlier in the Lafayette manifest, Fritz was aged 30 and Charlotte just one year younger at 29. The Census, however, drops Fritz's age to 29 and sheds three years off Charlotte, crediting her with being 26. |
On 4 November 1922, Marion Aufrichtig, the first of Fritz and Charlotte's two daughters, was born. Two years later, in 1924, Fritz again travelled to Europe. His return journey was on board the SS Westphalia which left Hamburg on 16 August 1924 and arrived in New York 28 August 1924. Under the "Naturalization" section, Fritz's passport number 418049 is entered, together with issuing court of Washington on 2 April 1924. His address was listed as 269 Water Street which, being the same as that given upon his return on SS Lafayette in December 1919, suggests that he and wife Charlotte had spent the night of the 8 January 1920 Census away from home.

About the same time as his return, the second of Fritz's daughters, Doris E Aufrichtig, was born. Both were included on the 1930 U.S. Census form. The form credits Doris with being 4 years and 7 months on the night of 2 April 1930, indicating that she was born August/September 1925. Depending upon the reliability of Census entries, in January 1920 Fritz had given his age as 29. In April 1930 he was listed as 40, suggesting that his birthday fell between 8 January and 2 April.

NOTE: Census form [left] also confirmed that Fritz possessed a radio and rented his home as opposed to owning it. The form reaffirms Fritz Aufrichtig's emigration to the U.S. in 1910, but lists Charlotte - whose name has been given as "Lotta" - as 1920 instead of 1919. The family were now living in Haven Avenue, by Riverside Drive, in uptown New York, and Fritz had switched profession and was now listed as a Chemist. The form contains a number of inconsistencies. In the December 1919 Lafayette Manifest, Fritz's age was given as 30 and Charlotte's as 29. A month later, in the 1920 US Census, Fritz dropped one year to 29, and Charlotte shed three years to become 26. Ten years later, Fritz has remained consistent at 40, but Charlotte is now five years his junior at 35! Political changes have resulted in their birthplace, and that of their parents, being given as Czechoslovakia NB: In the category "Age at first marriage", Fritz is given as 30 and Charlotte, 25, which suggests that his 1919 trip to Europe was for the purpose of marriage. |
In 1937 Fritz again travelled to Europe, on this occasion returning on the SS Vulcania which departed from Trieste on 29 July 1937 and arrived in New York on12 August 1937. His age remained consistent, at 47. The manifest indicates that he was no longer living in New York City, but had crossed over the Hudson and was now residing in Hackensack, New Jersey.

Fritz Aufrichtig died on 9 August 1948, aged just 58, The following record indicates that the death was registered as Manhattan. It is not known if he was actually living in the borough, died while working in the city, or his death merely registered there.

No further documentation has yet been located for either Marion or Doris Aufrichtig. However, on 6 July 1982, the death was recorded, in Buena Park, Orange, California, of a Lotte Aufrichtig, née Robitschek. The record confirmed Lotte as having been born "in another country", and gave her date of birth as 31 December 1890. Notwithstanding subsequent Census forms trimming years off Charlotte Aufrichtig's initially declared age of 29 on 6 December 1919, it appears most likely that this Lotte Aufrichtig was the widow of Fritz Aufrichtig.
A separate Record is included in the Social Security Death Index. On this record, however, Lotte's date of birth appears as 30 December 1889. According to the files, Lotte's Social Security Number was issued in New Jersey which may, possibly, refer to the Hackensack address at which Fritz Aufrichtig was living in 1937.
